Can you learn to kitesurf and surf in the same week?

Yes — and in Essaouira the daily wind cycle makes it easier than you would think. Here is how to structure a week so neither sport suffers.

It is one of the most common requests we get, and the answer is yes, with one condition: you have to be realistic about how far you will get in each.

Why it works here

Essaouira has a daily rhythm. Mornings are often lighter, with cleaner water and workable waves. The wind tends to build through the afternoon. That gives you a natural split — surf early, kite late — without either sport competing for the same hours.

A realistic week

  • Days 1 to 2: surf mornings — ocean safety, pop-up, riding whitewater
  • Days 1 to 3: kite afternoons — kite control on land, then body dragging
  • Days 4 to 5: kite water starts, first rides
  • Day 6: whichever the forecast favours, plus a free surf

What you can expect to reach

In surf, six mornings is enough for most beginners to ride whitewater confidently and start turning towards green waves. In kitesurf, the same week with 10 hours of coaching usually gets you to your first independent rides. Neither will make you an expert, and anyone promising otherwise is selling you something.

The trade-off to accept

Splitting your week means slower progress in each sport than dedicating it to one. If your only goal is to leave kitesurfing independently, spend the whole week on the kite. If your goal is to have the best possible week on the water, split it.

Our camps can be arranged either way — just say so in your booking note and we will build the schedule around the forecast.

Had a great experience with Naneakite! Abdou and Mohammed were great teachers. All the staff at their shop were very welcoming. This made for a great vacation in Essaouira. These guys are top notch and were cheaper than everyone else in the area with their riad deal. I did the 12 hour lesson package and I learned a lot about kiting. They were very transparent with me and helped me progress quickly. Thanks Naneakite!

Thank you NaneaKite for this great Kite-experience! I stayed for a week and I had alot of fun. The team is very friendly and professional. I learned so much from Mohammed, a patient and experienced teacher. Abdou wants everyone to have a great time and took us on a surfing trip when there was no wind for kiting. Thanks for everything, see you next time!

I wanted to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday with semi-private kitesurfing lessons, so we actually organised our trip to Morocco around it. My requirements were for the two of us to be together during our classes, but each have our own kite, and for the instructors to be certified and speak English. NaneaKite did not disappoint! We took 8 hours of lessons each and the progress we made was amazing. I had been in constant communication with Abdou, the owner, for months before our trip. He was always kind and reassuring, and kept me updated on the weather and kitesurfing conditions in Essaouira, which made planning everything so much easier. Our instructor, Mohammed, was amazing as well. He explained everything clearly from scratch, paid close attention to what we were doing, and corrected us whenever we made mistakes so that we could progress faster. We are so happy we chose NaneaKite and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking to learn kitesurfing in Essaouira!

The coach Elias was such a very respectful, kind and polite guy & passionate about what he’s doing. He never left the water and stayed the whole session supporting and making sure we’re doing the right moves.
