Frequently Asked Questions

About NaneaKite and learning in Essaouira

?Where is NaneaKite based in Essaouira?

Our school is on the main beach of Essaouira, at Rue Abdari, a short walk from the medina and right by the water. Every lesson starts here with a briefing and a gear check before we head out.

?Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes. You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim without assistance. You do not need to be a strong swimmer for surf lessons in shallow water, but for kitesurf and wingfoil you will spend time in water that is over your head.

?Should I choose kitesurf, surf or wingfoil?

Surf is the easiest to try for a single session and needs no wind. Kitesurf takes longer to learn but gives you the widest range of conditions in Essaouira. Wingfoil works in lighter wind than kitesurf and suits anyone who already has board experience. If you are unsure, tell us your dates and we will suggest the best fit.

?Do you teach children?

Yes. Children can start surfing from around 8 years old, and kitesurfing from around 12 depending on their build and swimming ability. For younger students we recommend private or semi private lessons so the instructor can stay right beside them.

?What languages do your instructors speak?

Our team is multilingual and teaches in English, French, Spanish and Arabic, so you can learn in the language you are most comfortable in.

?How far in advance should I book?

In the busy summer months we recommend booking a few weeks ahead, especially for camps that include accommodation. Outside high season we can often take students at short notice. Send us your dates and we will confirm availability.

Most Asked Question About Kitesurf Lesson, Surf Lesson, Kitesurf Rental and Kitesurf Camps

?Kitesurfing Sessions

We offer 2 sessions per day, typically 2-3 hours in the morning and 2-3 hours in the afternoon, depending on wind conditions and your energy levels.

?No Wind Policy

Kitesurfing is a weather-dependent sport and nobody controls the wind. If there is not enough wind for kitesurfing we switch to alternative activities — surf coaching, stand-up paddleboarding or a cultural excursion — so you still get the most out of your day. Because accommodation and instructor schedules are committed in advance, no partial refunds are issued for days with unsuitable wind or weather conditions.

?Getting to Essaouira

Surf FAQ

What people ask before their first surf lesson

?Do I need any experience to take a surf lesson?

None at all. Most of our students have never stood on a board before. Beginners start in shallow whitewater with a soft-top board, and the instructor stays in the water beside you for the whole session.

?What are the best surf spots around Essaouira?

The main bay of Essaouira is the most forgiving and where most beginner lessons happen. Depending on swell and level we also drive to Sidi Kouki, Tafedna and Imsouan, which pick up more size and suit intermediate surfers.

?Is Essaouira good for beginner surfers?

It is one of the friendliest beach breaks in Morocco. The bay has a long sandy bottom, the waves are usually flat and easy, and it is sheltered enough to stay workable when the swell picks up elsewhere.

?What is included in a surf lesson?

A board suited to your level, a wetsuit and leash, insurance, a certified instructor and transport to the best spot of the day.

?How many students are there per surf instructor?

Group surf lessons are organised by level with a maximum of 4 students per instructor. Semi lessons are 2 students, and private lessons are one to one.

?Can I surf in Essaouira all year round?

Yes, there are rideable waves throughout the year. The biggest swells arrive between autumn and spring, while summer tends to be smaller and cleaner, which is ideal if you are just starting.

Wingfoil FAQ

Everything you want to know before your first flight

?What is wingfoiling?

Wingfoiling means riding a board fitted with a hydrofoil while holding an inflatable wing in your hands. Once you have enough speed the foil lifts the board clear of the surface and you glide above the water almost silently.

?How long does it take to learn wingfoil?

Most students handle the wing and get moving on a large board within their first sessions, and start catching short flights on the foil after a few hours of coaching. Choose between private or semi lessons and you get constant support and feedback throughout.

?Do I need kitesurf or surf experience first?

No, but it helps. Any board background — surf, kite, wake or snowboard — makes the first sessions faster. Complete beginners are welcome; we simply start on bigger, more stable equipment.

?How much wind does wingfoiling need?

Wingfoil works in a wider wind range than kitesurfing, so we can often run wingfoil sessions on days that are too light for a kite. That makes it a good option if you are here outside the windiest months.

?What equipment do you provide?

The wing, foil board, foil and mast, plus wetsuit, helmet and impact vest — everything is included in the lesson price.

?How many students per instructor?

Our wingfoil lessons run as private lessons with one student per instructor and one wing, or semi lessons with two students, one instructor and two wings. Everything is included in both formats.

Camps FAQ

About our kitesurf and surf camps in Essaouira

?What is included in a NaneaKite camp?

Every camp bundles your lessons with accommodation in a riad, daily breakfast, full equipment, insurance and airport transfers. You arrive, and everything from the board to the bed is already arranged.

?What is the difference between a group, semi and private camp?

A group camp runs with a maximum of 3 students per instructor, a semi camp with 2, and a private camp is one to one. The lesson hours are the same — you are choosing how much individual attention you get, and the price changes accordingly.

?Where do camp students sleep?

In a traditional riad in the medina, a 2 minute walk from the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah Museum and about 7 minutes from the beach. Rooms have traditional Moroccan decor, free Wi-Fi and a TV, and family suites can take up to 4 people.

?Do the camps include airport transfers?

Yes, airport transfers are included. Agadir Al Massira and Marrakesh Menara are both roughly 2.5 hours away by road, and we arrange the pick-up once you confirm your flight times.

?Can I join a camp as a complete beginner?

Yes. Camps are built for beginner and intermediate levels. You start on the sand with theory and equipment handling, then move progressively into the water as your control improves.

?Can I book a camp for a group of friends or a family?

Yes. Tell us how many of you are coming and your dates in the booking form, and we will put together the right mix of group, semi or private lessons and the right rooms in the riad.

About this camp

Practical questions about booking and joining

?How many lesson hours does the camp include?

Each camp lists its own total in the highlights above — 8 hours on the shorter camps, 10 on the mid-length ones and 12 on the longest. Sessions are normally two to three hours a day so you progress steadily without getting exhausted.

?What happens if there is no wind during my camp?

We switch to an alternative activity: a surf or wingfoil session, stand-up paddleboarding, or a cultural excursion. Essaouira is windy most of the year, so full no-wind days are rare. Because accommodation and instructor schedules are committed in advance, no partial refunds are issued for days with unsuitable wind or weather conditions.

?Is breakfast included?

Yes, daily breakfast at the riad is included in every camp price, along with your nights, towels and linens and Wi-Fi.

?Can I add extra lessons or extend my stay?

Yes. Extra hours can be added to any camp at the normal lesson rate, and extra nights in the riad can usually be arranged. Mention it in the note field when you send your booking request.

?What should I bring?

Swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, a hat and water. All the technical equipment — board, kite or wing, wetsuit, harness, helmet and impact vest — is provided.

?How do I book this camp?

Use the Send Enquiry button on this page, choose the camp type you want and give us your dates and the number of people. We reply with availability and confirm your booking, usually the same day.

It wasn't just a vacation. It was my best solo trip. I booked a week with Nanea Kite, and they organized everything: hotel, kitesurfing lessons, and, most importantly, an experience that went far beyond my expectations. From day one, I felt welcomed, as if I were already part of the group. The people at Nanea are open, kind, helpful, and incredibly friendly. I thought I was coming here to learn and improve my kitesurfing, but I found myself in a family environment, where I met fantastic people and made new friends. A special thanks goes to Mohamed, my instructor: precise, competent, and very attentive, yet flexible and able to adapt to my level. Thanks to his method, I was able to progress quickly, but always gradually and, above all, safely. And that's what I appreciated most: feeling supported without ever feeling like I was being pushed beyond my limits. The hotel was also perfect: in the heart of Essaouira's medina, ideally located for experiencing the city and easily reaching everything you need. I didn't find a single negative about this experience. In fact, Nanea Kite gave me much more than I was looking for: it allowed me to improve my kitesurfing, but above all, to meet real people, make connections, and have an experience I'll carry with me forever. I left alone and came back richer and with new friends. I'll be back; in fact, I've already booked my flight for December. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart to the entire Nanea Kite team. I couldn't have asked for more. See you soon! 😎 💪🏼 !! SUELTA LA BARRA !! _____________________ It wasn’t simply a holiday. It was the best solo trip I’ve ever taken.
