Is kitesurfing hard to learn? What your first lesson really looks like

Nobody straps a board on in hour one. A walk through a real first session in Essaouira, minute by minute, so you know exactly what you are signing up for.

Kitesurfing looks intimidating from the beach — big kites, fast riders, jumps. In practice the first lesson is calm, slow and almost entirely on land. Here is what actually happens.

The briefing

Your instructor starts with the wind: where it comes from, what the wind window is, and which part of it makes power. You will hear the phrase power zone a lot. Then comes safety — the quick release, the leash, how to depower, and what to do if something goes wrong. Nothing else happens until this is clear.

The trainer kite

You fly a small kite first. It has the same steering logic as a full kite but a fraction of the pull, so mistakes are harmless. Most students find this genuinely fun, and it is where the muscle memory starts: the kite goes where you look, and small inputs are better than big ones.

The real kite, still on the sand

Then you set up a full kite with your instructor, learn to launch and land it with a partner, and practise holding it steady at the edge of the window. You will feel the power for the first time here — under control, with your instructor's hands close by.

Into the water

If time and conditions allow, the session finishes with your first body drag. No board yet. You simply let the kite pull you through the water and learn to steer while being moved.

So is it hard?

It is not hard in the sense of requiring strength or athleticism — the harness takes the pull, not your arms, and children of twelve manage it. What it requires is patience through the land phase. Students who enjoy the kite control stage progress fastest; students who want to skip to the board take longer.

Our beginner lessons run with a maximum of 3 or 4 students per instructor, and semi and private formats exist precisely so you can go at your own pace.

It wasn't just a vacation. It was my best solo trip. I booked a week with Nanea Kite, and they organized everything: hotel, kitesurfing lessons, and, most importantly, an experience that went far beyond my expectations. From day one, I felt welcomed, as if I were already part of the group. The people at Nanea are open, kind, helpful, and incredibly friendly. I thought I was coming here to learn and improve my kitesurfing, but I found myself in a family environment, where I met fantastic people and made new friends. A special thanks goes to Mohamed, my instructor: precise, competent, and very attentive, yet flexible and able to adapt to my level. Thanks to his method, I was able to progress quickly, but always gradually and, above all, safely. And that's what I appreciated most: feeling supported without ever feeling like I was being pushed beyond my limits. The hotel was also perfect: in the heart of Essaouira's medina, ideally located for experiencing the city and easily reaching everything you need. I didn't find a single negative about this experience. In fact, Nanea Kite gave me much more than I was looking for: it allowed me to improve my kitesurfing, but above all, to meet real people, make connections, and have an experience I'll carry with me forever. I left alone and came back richer and with new friends. I'll be back; in fact, I've already booked my flight for December. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart to the entire Nanea Kite team. I couldn't have asked for more. See you soon! 😎 💪🏼 !! SUELTA LA BARRA !! _____________________ It wasn’t simply a holiday. It was the best solo trip I’ve ever taken.
